In my attempts to perfect the sourdough loaf, I am continually baking.  My latest attempt:

another 5-grain sourdough loaf. This time, it ended up extremely wet and sticky, so I ended up adding a lot of extra flour. Result: a very very large loaf.

The finished product. It ended up being pretty big around, but not very tall. Probably due to the long rise, all the oomph had been taken out of the starter (plus, by the time it got around to baking, the flour to starter ratio was way off)

Up close, you can see the sunflower seeds embedded in the dough.

First slice. Good looking crumb. Very tasty, too.

I took the 5-grain Sourdough Bread recipe found on thefreshloaf.com and split it into two loaves:

The loaves didn’t turn out that evenly, but they look pretty good. I hope they taste as good as they look! We also resolved to make sourdough pancakes (also a recipe found on thefreshloaf.com):

Emmett was very interested to try some:

So, we let him!

Nom, nom, nom. He enjoyed them immensely, and so did we.

With the last dredges of batter, I made a last-minute Valentine’s Day present for Christina:

It was met with laughter and something to the effect of, “You crazy.”

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Let’s remember to love each other tomorrow, too.
